Best-known as the co-founder and frontman for shapeshifting heartland indie rockers Delta Spirit, Matthew Logan Vasquez‘s fiery delivery and thought-provoking lyrics draw from a huge and versatile well of influences, including Gordon Gano, Kurt Cobain, Neil Young, and Thom Yorke. As a solo artist, he juggles elements of indie rock, electronic pop, R&B, and soulful Americana, flirting with despondency, but ultimately succumbing to beatitude. Vasquez’s latest release Frank’s Full Moon Saloon – an album that delivers more raw versions of songs that span the band’s 20 year career, was released in February this year. Part 2&3 of the Franks series will be rolling out through 2025.
A fresh-faced band hailing from the vibrant heart of Long Beach, California, Softjaw was born of a chance meeting between Dustin Lovelis, the band’s enigmatic frontman and guitarist, and Tanner Duffy, a fellow guitarist and vocalist. Lovelis noticed a Big Star pin adorning Duffy’s jacket, a synchronistic nod to their shared affection for the eclectic realm of rock ‘n’ roll and power pop. Softjaw’s music is a harmonious fusion of Beatles-esque melodies and ’90s power pop nostalgia with infectious hooks and anthemic choruses. When seeing them live, it is impossible to resist the urge to sway, tap one’s foot, or sing along as their songs surge forth with an infectious energy.
